Indonesian state owned PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium said that it will increase production three times over by expanding to Borneo and utilizing the bauxite ore resources found there. Inalum will increase its current nameplate capacity of 250 thousand tonnes per annum with a new, 500 thousand tonnes per annum aluminium smelter in North Kalimantan. That smelter, which is currently undergoing a feasibility study, is estimated to cost up to USD 2 billion and will take some years to complete.
The company also plans to double capacity at its existing smelter in North Sumatra''s Kuala Tanjung to 500,000 tonnes, Kosasih said.
In addition, Inalum’s PT Aneka Tambang is constructing an alumina refinery with a nameplate capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum in Kalimantan. The refinery, which Antam has slated for a 2022 start, is also aimed at reducing the cost of raw materials for Indonesia’s aluminium smelters.
